Day 186 – Tue 7 Mar – Our little elite group met for Ch7 and 8 of Knowing God. Packer writes beautifully on the immutability and majesty of God….
‘Our personal life is a finite thing: it is limited in every direction, in space, in time, in knowledge, in power. But God is not so limited. He is eternal, infinite and almighty. He has us in His hands; but we never have Him in ours. He is personal, but unlike us He is great.’….’Living becomes an awesome business when you realise that you spend every moment of your life in the sight and company of an omniscient, omnie present creator’
There were only 3 of us there but we had a great time.
I spent the morning back at home preparing Romans 12 and Isaiah 55. ELT went well and we have good numbers, encouragingly one of the newcomers gave a gift to support the work. I was on Romans 12:9-21 on living out Christ’s righteousness. Afterwards I caught the bus down to Isleworth for a pastoral visit to friends of mine who are in London for a major cancer op. I was around for tea and then had a couple from the church come to visit.
One of the things I think no one tells you about the ministers life is just the need to stay emotionally balanced, what I mean by that is not to get too high with the encouragements and when things are going well, nor to get depressed by the discouragements. There’s a danger that we get detached but the slings and arrows of church life mean that we that we have to hold things lightly and when our hopes and plans don’t become reality that’s ok. In our kind of congregation a lot of it is just plodding and praying for long term fruit.
